Asterism is a rare optical phenomenon that causes a star-like pattern to appear in some gemstones when light reflects off of microscopic needle-like inclusions within the stone. The number of rays produced by the inclusions determines the type of star that appears:
Hexagonal or pseudohexagonal symmetry: Three rays produce a six-pointed star.
Isometric symmetry: Two rays produce a four-pointed star. 
 
Asterism is most commonly seen in sapphires and rubies, but it can also appear in other minerals, such as spinel, diopside, beryl, and quartz.
